Emerald is among the most valuable of gemstones. The name itself is derived from the Greek word 'smaragdus' meaning, "green gem". The ancient Egyptians mined Emeralds nearly 3,000 years ago, and Cleopatra was an avid emerald collector. In the 16th Century Spanish explorers found large Emeralds in the possession of the Aztecs and Incas and went on to discover the now famous Chivor and Muzo mines, of Colombia.
Colombian emerald mines are legendary and continue to produce the finest specimens. Three mining sites in Colombia are particularly noteworthy: Muzo, Chivor and Coscuez. Each locality produces a range of colours but, generally speaking, darker tones of pure green emeralds come from Muzo. Emeralds that are lighter in tone and slightly bluish green are associated with Chivor. Slightly yellowish green emeralds are unearthed in Coscuez.
An Emerald symbolises rebirth and youth. Believed by the ancients to empower the owner with foresight into the future. An Emerald is regarded as an amulet for good fortune, and success. Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty coveted them, and believed Emeralds bestowed upon the wearer faithfulness and unchanging love. An emerald always brings joy to the wearer.
As the pre-eminent member of the beryl family of minerals, Emerald is among the most treasured of all gemstones. When choosing an Emerald look for the strength in the colour, and balance this against the clarity and brilliance that emulates from this fine green gem.
